Recently the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) banned the sale of most antibacterial soaps (hand wash, body wash, soaps, etc…) that contain 19 active ingredients including Triclosan (found in many products to curb bacterial contamination). After reviewing available data on these products the FDA determined that they are in fact no more effective at fighting germs than good old soap and water. In addition, these products could be harmful to human and environmental health by disrupting hormonal pathways and creating drug resistant bacteria. So you want to protect yourself from nasty germs? Just use regular soap and water.
The current ruling does not include antibacterial hand sanitizers and wipes but the FDA is looking into long term exposure to these products as well.
